The Challenge

Wigan & Leigh Hospice have been providing vital palliative and end-of-life care to people with life-limiting illnesses who live in the Wigan and Leigh Borough. As the organisation does not charge for care, they rely on the local community to continue to support hospice care and services. Funding for its staff training and development is available, however the charity does rely on sourcing funding for many new projects. It also relies on support from income generated work it undertakes, so any funding for training that can be sourced is appreciated.

As well as providing exemplary care for its patients, Wigan & Leigh Hospice is fully committed to the continued personal development of its workforce. They wanted to create an opportunity for their team leaders and managers to participate. The overall objective would be that it would help them become more skilled, confident and rounded leaders.

Total Excellence Centre sourced some ERDF funding for the hospice to undertake a nationally recognised qualification in team leader skills. This opportunity has provided the perfect platform for those new to team leading, helping them to better manage their people and team performance.

“Whenever we have a specific learning and development requirement, Total Excellence Centre will always tailor their services to develop a solution that meets our needs. They are also very proactive in sourcing funding which as a charity we greatly appreciate, as it provides development opportunities to up-skill our people with minimal financial impact.”

The Solution

Due to a long-standing partnership, Total Excellence Centre fully understood the training requirements of Wigan & Leigh Hospice and tailored the content of the programme to specifically suit the training needs of the hospice. Back in 2015 the hospice initially commenced with a cohort of 10 employees through an in-house ILM Level 2 funded Certificate in Team Leading. Employees were encouraged to attend and the feedback on completion was very positive.

Total Excellence Centre suggested further training programmes for the hospice and proactively sought funding to continue supporting the organisation. This included further ILM Accredited programmes, designed for middle and senior managers, as well as bespoke Team Dynamics, Mediation, The Coaching Mindset and Get Successful courses.

They have also introduced Success Insights™ Behavioural Profiling, which has enabled the hospice to get a more in-depth understanding of behavioural habits and team dynamics, within the organisation.

A further funded cohort of 9 managers was completed recently which included a refresher style course, to follow up on the behavioural and team dynamic sessions, to determine how employees have developed, with an additional 8 team leaders undertaking a funded ILM Level 2 Certificate in Team Leading.

The Results

Total Excellence Centre’s training programmes were well received by the participating employees. Wigan & Leigh Hospice reported positive outcomes in terms of leadership styles and noticeable changes in employees having greater understanding of fellow employees' roles.

“Thanks to our long-standing relationship with Total Excellence Centre, they proactively inform us of funding that is available for courses and programmes to help develop our workforce which as a charity we are grateful for. The trainers who run the programmes are first class and really take the time to understand our organisation and its people to ensure courses are tailor delivered to meet our needs.”

The aim of the scheduled refresher style courses with Total Excellence Centre was to work with the hospice employees once again and highlight their development from completing their initial first programmes and provide further training in areas that may be required.

Total Excellence Centre has provided Wigan & Leigh Hospice with a well-established training programme framework and our employees are fully invested in this.

We have worked with Wigan and Leigh Hospice for a number of years now and built a strong working partnership. Their executive team is very receptive to new ideas and learning and development generally, which is so refreshing and makes for a genuinely positive and engaging experience, for all parties. It is just a pleasure to work with them.” Michelle Mercer, Director, Total Excellence Centre.
